History

Indo-Americans have settled in the Rochester, NY community for many generations.  It is painfully obvious that in spite of the economic and professional success of the Indo-American community, our presence and influence in the community at large is very limited.  In early 2006, a group of dedicated members of our community initiated an effort to start a civic leadership training program for Indo-Americans.  The program’s goal is to cultivate, train and place talented professionals of Indian origin in our community in the positions of policymaking decisions of civic organizations throughout the Monroe County.

The program is called “DIAL” - Development of Indo-AmericanLeaders.  DIAL aims to ensure that community and civic organizations are tapping the full potential of the Indo-American community, and at the same time ensure that the Indo-American community assimilates with the community at large.  DIAL was incorporated in Rochester, NY on March 9, 2006 with its first board meeting held on April 26, 2006.

Why Participate?

Indo-Americans are the most affluent ethnicity in the United States, earning more per household than any other ethnic background including Caucasians.  We are highly cultured, highly educated, and highly motivated.  Yet we lack the political and social “muscle” of other ethnicities.

African-American, Hispanic and Jewish communities, among others, have made strong efforts to organize their base and exert influence for issues that are important to them.  Indo-Americans must follow a similar model.  By completing the DIAL training, participants will develop a specialized skill set, and receive assistance in placement to boards of civic organizations across Monroe County.

Through participation in DIAL, Indo-Americans will position themselves as policymaking leaders throughout the community.  This serves two key functions:

1.      An opportunity to give back to the community that has offered so much to previous generations of Indians immigrants

2.      An opportunity to influence public policy, allowing us to better ensure the success of future generations of Indo-Americans
